Keeping your body conditioned has many benefits in life. Not only will it help you get the most out of your adventures but your overal quality of life will be improved. Sure, it takes time and effort, but it’s worth it.

Theory

Strength Training and Cardio – both types of training should be used in order to achieve our goals of being able to move like an athlete and improve our healthy and longevity. There are many different ways to approach each, some better than others. I could tell you to do what I do: full body strength training program and mixed cardio with plenty of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) like sprints and other short burst of high intensity work.

This approach works for me:

  • Strength Program – builds foundational strength by tracking and increasing my progressive overload
  • HIIT – time efficient, highly effective, improves cardiovascular health, burns fat and encourages muscle growth, increased calorie burn and much more.
  • Cardio – One step down from sprints (15-35 minutes strenuous workouts). Builds work capacity, agility and strength
  • Calestenics – Great for strength and mobility. Also a good option when weights are not around.

Depending on someone’s age and abilities, some HIIT workouts may not be feasible but should be strongly considered. Worried about joint issues or other injuries? Remember there are low impact methods for HIIT like, swimming/water workouts, stair climber, rowing, cycling, etc.

People often times steer clear of true HIIT workouts as they are more difficult than traditional cardio, but their benefits are much greater as well.
